James Hamp

James entered the profession in 2017 and works in the IT & Engineering team at Mathys & Squire. He holds a PhD and undergraduate Master’s degree in Physics.

James works in the IT & Engineering team on a wide variety of subject matter. His doctoral research involved studying the unique properties of a class of so-called ‘frustrated’ magnets, and he is the author of several peer-reviewed publications on the subject. He has a strong background in most aspects of Physics, especially theoretical condensed matter Physics, including magnetism, superconductivity, superfluidity, and phase transitions. He also has extensive practical experience in computer programming and high-performance computing.


James holds a PhD in theoretical condensed matter Physics from the University of Cambridge. Previously he graduated top of his year with an undergraduate Master’s degree in Physics from the University of Warwick, winning the Styles Prize for Excellence. He also received the highest mark in the year for his Master’s project.
